G.Mahler - Symphony n.5

R.Concertgebouw Orchestra - dir R.Chailly - DECCA 458 860-2

This recently Decca' s release joins to the large array of V^ symphony recordings exiting in the market. However its issue must be warmly welcomed for the extreme sharpness by which the conductor R.Chailly has examined the complex score and has sounded the most hidden secrets realizing a very high performance. This impression comes immediately to light just from the first measures, where the brightness of the reading points out every smallest detail of the score. Impressive, in the sonorous amalgam, the single parts. Hallucinating the "Funeral movement". Deeply touching the "overworked" Adagietto, that R.Chailly treats with refinement and lightness as to translate it in an evanescent dream. Wonderful, finally, the Finale where the conductor does 't lose the track of his path to take the listener to the "natural end" of the symphony.

Praise to the splendid orchestral team! We must listen to the presence, made tangible of the winds, the luxury sonority of the brass . This orchestra which boasts a centenarian tradition in Mahler's performances , under the baton of R.Chailly reaches the tops usually ascribed to the other blazoned European orchestras. Don't lose this CD !
